KiteSurfing Holidays on the Magdalen Islands

In the hopes of reaching the moon men fail to see the flowers that blossom at their feet.
Why not go to extremes this year and take a kitesurfing holiday?
The Magdalen Islands (Iles de la Madeleine) are well known for their wicked cross-currents and savage winds, which seem to come out of nowhere and change direction at the most unreasonable times. These winds give rise to a whole slew of extreme activities, including that of kite surfing.

It is a wonderful sport, exercising many of the major muscles in the body. The islands have multiple bays and lagoons on which to practice with the kite. Learning to do kite stunts is relatively safe and fun on the peaceful waters and in the frequent average winds of 20-40 kilometers. There are several island companies dedicated to teaching the kite surfing sport.

But not all kite surfers are content to play in calm waters. Some are kite surfing extremists, who relish in the adrenalin rush of taking to extreme winds and rough waters. They take the sport to all new levels.

Hurricane Earl didn't make such a bad impression on the islands, but kite surfers were extreme, to say the least, off Old Harry Beach. The wind reached 70 km from the east, pushing the choppy waves up on the Northeast end of the islands.

It took an extreme personality to face theses waves even though they weren't so very high. The 8-foot waves were made difficult by the distance between each one.

These extreme surfers often come from the mainland to surf the rough waters around the islands. They don't know or understand the currents that flow just underneath the surface. Nevertheless, there they are, out in the waves and getting an extreme adrenalin rush.

Wynn Currie is an expert on the considered an expert on the Magdalen Islands (Iles de la Madeleine) after working in the tour guiding business for the past 10 years, taking multiple courses about the islands and creating a substantial following on numerous blogs and websites about the Islands. She is the author of several novels about the islands both fiction and non-fiction and is commonly called upon to give history courses at the adult level.
